Watson’s Mill - a working water powered flour mill.
                                       Inside the mill.

                                 Downtown Manotick.
Dickinson House was the mill owners home.

Manotick is considered to be in the rural, southern part of Ottawa. As I said in a previous post, it’s a sprawling city! It’s a nice place, although a lot of these water towns begin to run together. Most of them have nice restaurants, pubs, art studios, etc; it’s just some are bigger than others with more (or less) of the same.

In Manotock, we had the privilege of touring Watson’s Mill, a flour mill, powered by water. It’s one if the few operating grist mills in North America. They continue to sell flour,
baked bread and offer milling demonstrations ever Sunday. Unfortunately, we were not there on a Sunday. The mill was founded in 1860.

The mill is also well known for its ghost, Annabelle. The legend is she haunts the mill following her death after her tragic accident there in 1861. Annabelle was married to one of the co-owners of the mill and shortly after their wedding and returning from their honeymoon, they were having a celebration at the mill, honoring their one year successful operation of the mill. While walking through the congestion of the mill and operating machinery, her dress caught on a turbine and she was flung against a pillar killed instantly. Her husband lost all interest of the mill and sold his portion to his business partner. A very sad story, however, we never saw or heard the ghost, Annabelle.
