Pensacola

Jeff snapped this picture the morning we left Pensacola!
We had some wind a couple of nights, but Boomerang held fast!

We left Gulf Shores on November 25, 2022 and headed to Pensacola.  We were on the intracoastal, admiring numerous homes along the way and seeing lots of birds and a couple of dolphins.  We didn’t have any plans of where to stay and we were having trouble finding a marina with a slip available. We had called several marinas and left a lot of messages.  Finally, as we’re cruising into Pensacola Bay, 3 marinas returned our call with availability. As each one called, their prices continued to get less expensive and we ended up going with Pensacola Yacht Club (PYC) for $1.50 each foot, at $37.50 a night - much cheaper than the $70 and $60 prices per night from the other
 two marinas.

PYC was so nice!  We met a looper couple, Trina and Richard, on Stella Maris.  We had dinner at the yacht club.  It was the most delicious food we’ve had since we started the loop (even better than the home cooked meals!). PYC also had free laundry and free ice, clean bathrooms/showers and a great place to walk Traxx.  So many people at PYC introduced themselves to us and provided us with suggestions and specific stops for our journey.  Some people even offered us rides. Everyone has been very nice!

My niece, Elissa James and her husband, Tyler, also were in Pensacola.  We spent a lot of time with them, which made our stay in Pensacola even more fun!  We ate at a lot (probably too much) and took in the downtown area.

We really enjoyed downtown Pensacola.  From PYC, we could walk to town. We definitely got our steps in! Downtown Pensacola is about 2 miles from here and then once you walk around town and back, it adds up!  It's a very cute downtown, with a lot of shops and restaurants. I think we hit every brewery within a 5 mile radius of PYC - Jeff prefers a brown ale or a porter - I like red wine!

We also visited with Boundless or Nagui is actually his name.  He has a Rosborough Boat like us.  He came to Pensacola, but stayed at a different marina, however we were able to visit over dinner together.  He's very nice and it was great visiting with him again.

We also met other loopers, Colin and Wendy on Detour from Canada.  We enjoyed chatting with them the night before we left.

We stayed in Pensacola, much longer than we had anticipated,  because we were having our generator repaired.  It needed a new belt, which apparently are hard to come by - like a lot of other things in the USA these days - such as Tamiflu.  I heard that's in limited supply too.  We met a man, Kenny, who offered up his car so we could run to town.  He jokingly called us squatters!  We have been here a while!  Finally, after about 2 weeks, the the generator belt arrived and it was repaired. We were finally able to depart Pensacola for out next destination - Fort Walton.

Night fishing - he was there every night!

Downtown Pensacola - we met a guy
with his Macaw, Maverick.
Some turkeys we came across on a walk - I was close to getting flogged and spurred! Tame turkeys are mean I guess!

Boats decorated for Christmas - this one is huge!
And their home behind is too!
                 Downtown Pensacola- ready for Christmas!

They have these cute pelicans in downtown area.
My niece, Elissa and I.  Our hair is a little messy.
                                           Boomerang!
A street in Pensacola - so cute - last year, they hung umbrellas!
                                          PYC Marina
These 2 Black Drum Fish came and ate the barnacles off the side of the dock almost every night!
It’s beginning to look a like lot Christmas.
                                       Sleigh boats ring!
                                 Another female pelican!
                                             Fly away!
                             Christmas time in Pensacola!
Tyler and Elissa James and us; so nice to visit with them!
Santa Claus is coming to town - I bet he hits a brewery soon!
More downtown Christmas decorations.
Seville Quarter in Pensacola - like the French Quarter in New Orleans - only music smaller.
                                        Horseshoe crab -
did you know that they are more than 300 million years old?
Older than dinosaurs and more related to spiders and              scorpions - but not poisonous. Interesting!

  2. We spent time at PYC back in January 2014 when we delivered our new to us sailboat purchased in Punta Gorda to Houston along the GICW. This post brings back sweet memories! I hope you got to the Naval Air Museum - it was amazing! We found the yacht club to be so friendly and fun as well. When we left the dock to continue west it was actually snowing!! Really enjoying your blog so far! We have wanted to do the Great Loop for years and are considering a Rossi.

    1. Unfortunately, we were not able to tour the museum. You have to go with someone who is affiliated with the service, but I’ve heard it’s something that shouldn’t be missed! The yacht club was great; it was a good place to be stuck for 2 weeks! We’re enjoying our Rossi; it’s been good to us!
