North Myrtle Beach & Southport, NC

This was a big navy ship (we think) coming out on Cape Fear.
Docktails on Robert Creech’s front porch.
His wife was so sweet too!
                    Beautiful sunset at Morningstar Marina.

A cruise boat on the Waccamaw River.

This could have been for weddings at the marina.
The small beach area but so pretty.

I think “A Walk to Remember”
Was filmed here.
Someone’s gorgeous rose garden.
This is the small area with restaurants, bars, etc.
At Southport, NC.

This is about where the accident occurred.

A lighthouse on the Waccamaw River

So, North Myrtle Beach - Waccamaw River - don’t cruise that on a weekend!  The river was crazy busy - so many boats, so many wakes!  The last time we had cruised on a Saturday was back at Fort Myers and there was a lot of boat traffic.  After that, we swore off of Saturday travels; but for whatever reason, we decided to travel on this particular day, in hindsight, we shouldn’t have.

We were cruising with our buddy boat, Nagui, on Boundless.  He has the same kind of boat as us.  So we’re cruising the Waccamaw - more like “wake ‘em all” River.  We’re following Nagui, then a big cruiser yacht wakes past us, wakes past Nagui then just pulls right in front of him to a dock on his starboard side.  And about that same time, we hit something underneath the water.  I saw the motor hit something because it lifted up just a bit - I was actually turned around looking at the jerk who waked us and turned right in front of us! Anyway, Jeff checked the motor and everything seemed ok.  It was running, no damage noticed and all seemed good, for now.

That night, we ended up staying at a marina called Harbourgate Marina.  It was right in the waterway before a bridge.  We sat there and watched all of boats waking everybody, while the dock staff tried to motion everyone to slow down - it never worked!  There were a lot of Freedom Boat Club boaters - they just rent a boat and maybe they have no idea what they’re doing.  That’s what it seemed like anyway.

The next day we were traveling to Southport, NC.  I really wanted to stay at Morningstar Marina.  Apparently, everyone else did too because they told me they were full. Usually, since we’re a smaller boat, they can squeeze us in.

As we’re cruising along, we can see the inlet. You always know when an inlet is near because the water turns to a beautiful blue. The water was beautiful but getting pretty rough and then the boat suddenly became squirrelly. There was a strong current from the inlet and the boat wasn’t responded.  It seemed like Boomerang (our boat) could not move over 3-4 mph and the current was strong! We ended up pulling the boat onto a beach, that dropped off, and called BoatUS.  I was so scared.  So much was happening and it just seemed like we had little control.  But, Jeff told me, “It’s just like a car and we had an accident.”  That helped me a lot because it’s so true.  Accidents happen - we were ok and it turned out to be and quick and easy repair on the boat.

BoatUS was there within and hour.  They towed us to - you won’t believe it - but to Morningstar Marina!!!  That’s where I wanted to stay anyway.  I would say it was perfect but it all worked out.  Turns out, we spun a hub on the prop.  Thanks to harbor host, Robert Creech, in Southport for the use of his vehicle and also to Intracoastal Marine Outboard, our prop was repaired, plus we had a spare prop!

So - a bit about Southport.  It was a charming place.  We walked to a small area on the water front - very nice.   We also enjoyed docktails on Robert Creech’s front porch with a lot of loopers.  We met up with James and Lorraine on Northern Escape.  We hadn’t seen them since PCB.  It’s a great stop for loopers.  And did you know that there have been a lot of movies filmed here?  With the towns beach town feeling, historical setting and tree lined streets, I’m pretty sure it makes for a beautiful setting!
